Chapter 3 discusses the psychoanalytical significance of Jia Baoyu's dream, which is presented as an example for the conscious and unconscious struggles and conflicts of the protagonists. The conclusion of the analysis draws from a recent biography of Jia Baoyu, which reads the events of the novel as a tragedy. In chapter 4, the structures of the dream are articulated in terms of the positions of the young brothers in relation to their siblings, mothers, and fathers. The mother Jia takes a maternal role with her sons and encourages them to be filial and to accept their inheritance of birthrights. The more powerful father Jia, who is secretly in love with her, reflects his desire for her and will step forward to protect her children's inheritance. However, as mothers are dependent on sons, the mother is unable to count on this support.
Chapter 5 analyzes the portrayal of the Mother in Honglou Meng and distinguishes between the naturally endowed Great Mother and the literary or "symbolic" Mother. The symbolic Mother begins to transform in the early chapters of the novel as she acquires three "external" companions: Xue Baochai, Li Wan, and Shi Xiangyun. These new virtues are supposed to replace the losses and heartlessness of Jia Baoyu's original mother. Symbolic Mothers provide abstract maternal symbols in order to take the place of the Great Mother. The symbolic Mother tends to construct images of feminine wholeness for the individual imaginary.
The symbolic interpretation of the Mother's transformation and drive for wholeness is explained in chapter 6 through the emergence of the triad of wisdom, beauty, and family. The novel follows Bao-chai into the symbolic and her journey to achieve wholeness, while the other brothers deliberately remain in keeping with the preconception that women are inferior to men. Jia Jing is initially unable to accept that Jia Baoyu is not the hero of the novel and that his beloved Dai-yu is his inferior. Hence, he is unable to accept that he is not the most important member of the family. The destiny of both Jia Baoyu and his uncle Jia Ren forms the trilogy through the whole novel. d2c66b5586
